DLC END MILL 6MM

DLC END MILL 6MM

Definition:

  • Solid Carbide: The tool is made entirely from tungsten carbide, a very hard and wear-resistant material.

  • DLC Coating (Diamond-Like Carbon): A very hard, low-friction carbon coating that mimics some properties of diamond.

Key Characteristics:

Feature Description
Material Tungsten carbide core for strength and durability.
Coating DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) for extreme hardness (up to ~70+ HRC) and low friction.
Color Typically dark gray to black, sometimes with a metallic sheen.
Flutes Typically 2 to 4 flutes depending on the application.

Advantages:

  • Low friction coefficient → less heat and longer tool life.

  • Excellent wear resistance → suited for abrasive materials.

  • High surface finish quality due to reduced built-up edge (BUE).

  • Dry machining capable (especially with aluminum and copper alloys).

  • Non-stick behavior → less material adhesion (ideal for soft/sticky materials).

 Typical Applications:

Material Why DLC is Good
Aluminum Prevents built-up edge, improves finish.
Copper Low friction helps with sticky metals.
Graphite Wear resistance and edge sharpness are critical.
Plastics & Composites Clean cuts, no melting or smearing.
Non-ferrous metals Avoids tool loading, extends life.

When Not to Use DLC Coating:

  • On ferrous materials (e.g., steel, stainless steel, cast iron), DLC is not ideal because:

    • High heat causes the coating to degrade.

    • Poor adhesion to ferrous surfaces under thermal load.

Geometry Notes:

  • DLC-coated end mills often feature sharper cutting edges since the coating provides protection.

  • Choose high-helix angles for aluminum and soft metals.

  • Use 1 or 2-flute designs for maximum chip evacuation in soft materials.
